THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE - Advice to Juniors from the Class of 2007

It is harder to raise your GPA in the junior year than you think it will be.
Start looking at colleges in the spring; start your essays over the summer.
Make sure that colleges offer a good environment for you.
Ask about the negatives when you visit colleges.
Campus visits can help you narrow your list down.
Like your back-up schools - you may need them.
Don’t just pick a school because your friends like it.
Don’t get hooked on just one school - you might not get in there.
Your ideas about what you want will change over time.
Don’t obsess over the college process - you still need to do well in school.
Don’t just focus on school - find an activity you love.
Don’t let the college process dictate what activities you do.
Think about getting a job.
Start forming good relationships with teachers now so you have people you can ask to write recommendations for you.
Ask your teachers early to write letters for you so they have time.
If you want to submit artwork with your applications, talk to your art teachers now about what you will need to do.
Look at some applications now to learn what they ask.
Use the Common Application http://www.commonapp.org
Plan carefully to take the SAT Reasoning and the SAT Subject Tests (if your colleges require them) so you can fit them all in.
Take the ACT as a junior.
Send an essay, even if it’s not required.
Save a writing sample from junior year.

COLLEGE ENTRANCE TEST INFORMATION

Part-time Job Opportunity

My name is Chris Richard and I’m the Human Resources Manager at a company called Capital Recovery Service.  We’re a major call-center in Jacksonville (off of Arlington Expressway) that specializes in Debt Collection, Medical Billing and Courtesy Calling for top-notch companies all across the country.

We are currently interested in employing some part-time help, to assist with a new project that we are beginning in the very near future.  Specifically, we’re hoping that some of your students might be interested in working 3 or 4 hours in the evenings for this new Medical Billing project.

To give you a brief synopsis of what we’re looking for in a candidate and a bit about what we offer:

Environment:  Professional Office (we employ about 100 individuals currently)

Job Duties:  Printing out HCFA Claim forms and other administrative office work

Hours:  Afternoon or Evening (about 3 or 4 hours a day, Monday through Friday – Depending on the individual student and what they can handle, we can be flexible regarding times of work and number of hours worked in a week)

Pay-Rate:  $8.00/hour

Candidate:  Should be willing to learn, have basic computer skills, and may or may not be interested in the Medical Billing field, or just be excited about gaining exposure to a Business Office environment.

Benefits:  First and foremost, I think this job would be an outstanding item to put on a young person’s resume.  Also, we have a comfortable, professional and safe work-setting here.  Plus, $8.00/hour is not bad and we can work with a person’s school and extracurricular activity schedule.
