Scholarship for minority women in technology

Scholarship Opportunity for Women In Technology at FAMU

CIS Program Seeks to Resolve the Digital Divide Between African-American Women with New Grant
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida A&M University (FAMU) Computer Information Sciences (CIS) Program, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, is the recipient of a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant valued at $552,000 dedicated to recruiting minority women to computer science and information technology disciplines.

“The numbers are staggering,” said Jason T. Black, Ph. D., assistant professor in CIS. “The latest data shows that out of all U.S. entering freshmen declaring a major in computer science, African-American women made up only 3.3 percent. The fact is that women are not choosing technology, and this is a dangerous predicament. When you couple that with the fact that it is estimated that 75 percent of all jobs by the year 2020 will require a technology background, it becomes a crisis call.”

The program, entitled African-American Women in Computer Science, (AAWCS), is a four-year program that provides scholarships and other assistance to women who express a financial need and an interest in computer science or information technology.

AAWCS, created by Black, also the principal investigator for the program, and Edward L. Jones, Ph. D., chair of the CIS program, will directly address the dismal number of minority women, particularly African-American women that pursue degrees in computer science or information technology.

Women who apply to AAWCS will be accepted based on financial need, and will be awarded a scholarship of between $3,000 and $5,000 per semester. In addition to the funding, the women will participate in CIS departmental clubs and organizations, such as the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Club, the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and the CIS Mentoring Organization (CISMO). AAWCS scholars will also be involved in other STEM programs, such as the Florida/Georgia Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (FGLSAMP) scholarship program, and the Students and Technology in Academia, Research and Service (STARS) Alliance, both NSF-funded programs.

An added benefit to the students is the conference participation, where selected AAWCS scholars will be chosen to attend two national conferences, paid for by the grant, each year, such as the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing and the National Conference of Women in Information Technology (NCWIT).

DCPS is looking for student volunteers for the Annual Superintendent’s Book Club Celebration on Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Metropolitan Park. This could be a perfect opportunity for those individuals needing community service hours for Bright Futures or IB or NHS.

Two different groups will be needed to serve at different times:

one group from 8 a.m. through noon to assist with set-up and various jobs, and
one group to work 10 a.m. through 2 p.m. for break-down and various jobs.

Student-athletes must request final amateurism certification. This must be completed immediately in order for you to be eligible to compete prior to enrollment this fall.
1.Log in to his or her account at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.

2. Click on the “Enter/Update Amateurism Questionnaire” link on the left side of the screen.

3. Proceed to the bottom of the screen and click on “Enter/Update Amateurism Questionnaire.”

4. Review each question to make sure it is answered correctly.

5. Click on the “Exit Questionnaire” icon at the top of the screen. This will take you to the previous screen.

6. At the bottom of the current screen, click on the “Final Authorization Signature” icon and complete the electronic signature information.

GUIDELINES:

Young Entrepreneurs for Leadership & Change: Summer Program for High School Students at UF

The University of Florida is pleased to announce our 2nd Annual Pre-College Summer Program for High School Students:

Sponsored by UF’s Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, in Partnership with UF’s Center for Precollegiate Education & Training.

This program is for motivated, college-bound rising juniors and seniors who are interested in Entrepreneurship, Leadership, and Positive Social Change.

From June 29 through August 8, 2008 program participants will take two college-level courses at UF: GEB4930 - Exploring Entrepreneurship & SYG2010 - Social Problems & Solutions.
Participants will also complete 75 hours of community service (meeting the requirement for Bright Futures Scholarships). Students will participate in evening and weekend programing including a Speaker Series, mentor partnerships with Entrepreneurs and Nonprofit Leaders, field trips, visits with Gator Athletes, and other exciting events and activities. The program will culminate with an awards banquet on the final evening, recognizing the students for their leadership and entrepreneurial spirit.

Students will work, eat, play, and sleep on campus for the full duration of the program. They will be housed in Beaty Towers, near other high school students attending summer science & engineering programs. Participants will have access to the university’s facilities including a newly renovated library, student union and arts center, and many state of the art recreation and sports facilities (including three fitness facilities, nine fields, two pools, six outdoor court facilities, and a gym).

Space is still available. Interested students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will be invited on a rolling basis beginning March 1, 2008 and accepted until the program is full.

A volunteer with the BEACON PROGRAM will be available in the guidance office next Wednesday, Feb. 27 and Thursday, Feb. 28 to assist parents of seniors and/or their students in completing the FAFSA (FREE APPLICATION FOR FEDERAL STUDENT AID). BEACON volunteers have experience in financial aid and are very knowledgeable about the FAFSA. Appointments can be scheduled through the guidance office.
Remember, all students applying for any type of financial aid must complete the FAFSA and should do so as soon as possible.

FAFSA - the correct web site

There is only one correct site for the FAFSA - www.fafsa.ed.gov. The important thing to remember is that the web site URL ends in “gov” and not “com.” The other site is a commercial site that claims to do your FAFSA, but will charge you to do it.

The FFAA is the application for the Florida Bright Futures. This must be completed in order to get the Bright Futures. You do not, however, have to complete the FAFSA in order to get the Bright Futures. The FAFSA is to qualify your family to receive need-based financial aid.

We’re a major call-center in Jacksonville (off of Arlington Expressway) that specializes in Debt Collection, Medical Billing and Courtesy Calling for top-notch companies all across the country.

Job Duties: Printing out HCFA Claim forms and other administrative office work

Hours: Afternoon or Evening (about 3 or 4 hours a day, Monday through Friday – Depending on the individual student and what they can handle, we can be flexible regarding times of work and number of hours worked in a week)

Pay-Rate: $8.00/hour

Candidate: Should be willing to learn, have basic computer skills, and may or may not be interested in the Medical Billing field, or just be excited about gaining exposure to a Business Office environment.

Incorrect social security number
Using a nickname instead of legal name

Incorrect date of graduation; ours is 05/30/2008
Giving a GPA that is too low; enter at least a 2.75 as your unweighted GPA in order to have your transcript evaluated (GPA’s do not have to be exact, you may estimate) You can check your BF GPA through www.facts.org
Not answering question 38 correctly; unless you are a convicted felon or have pled nolo contendere to a felony charge, you should answer NO.

Why didn’t you send my transcript?

Many students are checking their application status screens, or are getting emails from colleges that state their applications are incomplete. These notifications are not totally accurate. Here is the process we use in Guidance:
- when a transcript and counselor’s form is requeste, we look first at the deadline for the application. If, for example, the deadline is November 1, we put other requests with later deadlines aside and complete the November 1 forms.
- we have so many to do, that some will be mailed *ON* November 1.
- from the time that we mail the materials until the college receives them is a few days; from the time that the college receives the materials until they are posted as received on your screen, could be up to 2 weeks.
So, you can see that if you check your screen on November 1 - you’ll probably be upset. But please remember - THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOUR APPLICATION WAS RECEIVED BY THE DEADLINE. If it was, then you are ON TIME, and whenever our materials are posted in OK as well.
If, however, you keep getting these notices well beyond the deadline, then please come it to see your counselor and if necessary, we will contact the college and send additional forms.

We spend a lot of time on our part of each application. We want to make sure our part gets to the college before the deadline. If you are working on any college applications with a deadline of January 1 or any date that occurs during our winter break, you need to bring the forms and request the transcript before November 28 - that will assure that we have sufficient time to process it and get it there on time. REMEMBER - you are *not* the only student we are working with.
So, if you are applying to a college with a deadline of January 1, and you fail to request the transcript by November 28, our part might not get there in time.
