FSU - important info about October 19 deadline
The system that sends transcripts electronically throughout the state U’s and colleges will be down from Friday, September 28 until around the second week of October. This down-time will present a problem for FSU to get transcripts for the October 10 application period. Request your transcript *TODAY* if you are applying to FSU for this deadline.
Requesting Transcripts
To request a transcript to be sent to a college or scholarship, go to http://cyberguidance.net/college/transcript.htm.
Complete the online form, click “Send” and your transcript will be processed. For FL state U’s, it will be sent electronically. For private colleges or out of state colleges, we will mail your official transcript. Also, for many private colleges, there is a form that must be completed by your counselor. Bring this form in soon in order to avoid a delay in processing your transcript.
Scholarship Scams - Avoid these.
Stay Away!!! There is an organization that is sending out appointments to students to “help determine college financial aid and admission eligibility.” There will be a fee for this service and the reliability of this group cannot be determined at this time. We believe this is the same organization that has been fined by the Federal Government for misleading practices. You can determine financial eligibility by completing a financial need calculator form at www.finaid.org or at www.collegeboard.com. You can determine your admission eligibility by talking to your counselor. The Federal Trade Commission has scam information at 877-FTC-HELP or www.ftc.gov/scholarshipscams and it cautions students to look and listen for these tell-tale lines from companies promising scholarships:
- “The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back.”
- “You can’t get this information anywhere else.”
- “I just need your credit card or bank account number to hold this scholarship.”
- “We’ll do all the work.”
- “The scholarship will cost some money.”
- “You’ve been selected” by a ‘national foundation’ to receive a scholarship - or “You’re a finalist” in a contest you never entered.
Remember the following:
- If you must pay money to get money, it might be a scam.
- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
- Spend the time, not the money.
- Never invest more than a postage stamp to get information about scholarships.
- Nobody can guarantee that you’ll win a scholarship.
- If you’re suspicious of an offer, it’s usually with good reason.
The American Scholars National Honor Society, Who’s Who Among American High School Students, The National Academy of Excellence, College Funding Group, and many other organizations that either entice you to come to a meeting to get financial aid or scholarships, or want to put your name into a book or “national registry, are questionable as to their benefits to you. Many colleges ask the students to *NOT* list these organizations on their applications. Please see your counselor for any specific questions before you sign on the dotted line. Information about financial aid and scholarship scams is available at www.finaid.org.

facts.org
We’ve told you about this site many times in the past. Many students still have not visited facts.org and viewed their Florida Bright Futures (FBF) GPA. It is critical that you know what your FBF GPA is - NOW!! Your senior year grades might make the difference in your getting the FBF or not. Do yourself and your parents a favor - go to facts.org now, print out your transcript, and do the math to make sure that you will get the award.
As a reminder, when you get to facts.org, create or view your high school academic history/record. YOUR grades are there - YOUR GPA has already be calculated. Don’t be disappointed in June when your FBF GPA is a 2.9999 and you don’t get the award. They don’t round up - be certain about your record.
Apply Early
At a recent meeting with all of the Directors of Admission of the State Universities in Florida, the one consistent word of caution that they gave the high school counselors was to have students apply early. **EARLY** as in now. This is not “Early Decision” where you have to commit to the college if they accept you. There are many budget crunches at colleges and they might have to limit enrollment at some point. But they assured us that the earlier a student applies, the better “read” on the application and the better chance of admission. See your counselor for any questions.
